Kauai – Napali Coast Hike

by Funhog Family on December 5, 2024

We woke up this morning ready for adventure!  Our destination was the famous Napali Coast and the Kalalau Trail that runs along it.  Kerry mad us eggs this time, with a yummy smoothie, then we were off for our hour plus drive to the north shore of Kauai.

We arrived at Tunnels Beach around 11am and it was a beautiful morning, perfect for our hike.

We walked along the sea shore for 2 miles to get to the trailhead.  The last time I was here you could drive all the way to the trailhead.  Now you have two options, one buy a permit and shuttle in or do the beach hike which we chose as there was a little more freedom with our schedule that way.

The Kalalau Trail is 12miles, which rugged views and hiking conditions if it is raining.  We had clear skies, but the strenuousness of the trail was still a match for Hosanna.  We chose to only do the first 2 miles into a beautiful and treacherous beach.  Many have gotten sucked out in the waves, so we stayed on shore.  We had an option of doing another 2 miles up a mountain stream to a huge waterfall, but Hosanna had all the hiking she wanted and we still had 2 miles of trail and 2 miles of beach hiking to get back to the car.  I was extremely beautiful and worth doing, but at the same time exhausting.  We ate our lunch, left over delicious turkey veggie burgers from a previous night and then started hiking back toward the car.

In Hanalei we stopped at Jo Jos, for shaved ice.  It was amazing!  We had the tropical breeze, which had natural mango/pineapple/island fruit flavoring with a coconut drizzle and deep inside was a large scoop of vanilla with macadamia nuts ice cream but to Hosannas dismay hers did not have any ice cream.  The thing was also huge, so we should share one next time.

We got stuck in traffic on the way home.  We pulled into the Costco as the traffic was not moving anyway and had a bite to eat there.  Then we found a back way around the traffic.  Kerry got stuck in that same traffic jam and it took her 3hrs to travel probably as many miles.
