Hosanna’s 12yr old adventure begins! We left the house by 5a to make our 7a flight to Kauai. It was Hosanna’s first time on a plane, since her last trip to Hawaii, when she was only a couple months old.
After landing, a short taxi ride took us to Island Cars, a local car rental agency. They were very friendly and spent time going through all the sites we should see while we are on the island. The one that excited Hosanna the most was the Poipu Bay, where lots of sea turtles come each evening to rest on the shore.
We were very blessed on this trip to have the opportunity to stay in the home of a friend of a friend. We headed there first to grab a towel, then head straight to the beach to go snorkeling. There were lots of pretty fish.
Another thing we see everywhere, to Hosanna’s delight are chickens! She likes the baby chicks with the mom best. They were adorable! In the mid 90s a hurricane came through wreaking destruction, which included destroying several chicken coops around the island. Those chickens were blown all over the island and immediately began to reproduce. Now you will see chickens at ever turn and they might even be the state bird, as they have legal rights, making it important to not harm them in any way.
At the beach we found a turtle and two seals. They rope them off, keeping you at least five feet from touching them. These animals are used to people, as they seem to sleep soundly as we all get our fill of pictures.
After getting out of the water we saw signs for a Spouting horn, which is a geyser created by the ocean waves getting pressed through small hole in the rocks. It was nice to see for a moment. We also picked up a coconut at a local stand. The juice was a little green, but the meat of it was soft and yummy.
Back at home, we met our hosts, Greg & Kerry Forker. They are super gracious and loving. It is a treat to experience their love for the island and their ‘Aloha’ spirit, which is very giving and kind. Greg has been a cook for the Hyatt for the past 26yrs. He feed us thanksgiving leftovers that rivaled any 5 star restaurant. Stuffing ourselves with delicious food we called it a night.
