Colorado – Rocky Mountain High

Garden of the gods

Since the New Year, we really started digging in and planning the next stage of our trip. We have a few new challenges to deal with, as we will be having a new baby in July. With that in mind, I was seriously looking into attending an event in Colorado with Free Agent Academy (more on that later) and decided that it provided the perfect opportunity to take the family exploring in Colorado, thus conquering the 40th state in our 50 State Challenge. We didn’t have the luxury of taking our time getting there and ended up driving one 10-hour day which was particularly hard on the little ones. They persevered though, and we had a lot of fun playing in the snow in Woodland Park, meeting some new people, and visiting an old friend. After the weekend event, we celebrated Elijah’s 3rd birthday in Breckinridge, CO, sledding a great hill in Carter Park and checking out some snow sculptures. The Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships were held the week before we got there, and we were able to view some amazing sculptures done by teams from all over the world.
Our only upset was that Tirzah wasn’t feeling well that day (we think she got a little altitude sickness), though we did bundle her up and she went down the hill twice. We had planned to try out our tent camping in the colder weather (as we will be heading North in April to hit the rest of the contiguous states and need to test our tent heater) but with the long drive before the event, and sickness after, we ended up in hotels each night. Not to mention, we have lived in Phoenix for 13 years now, and those wintery January days and nights in the Rockies were quite … um, COLD!!
