Texas – Making Lemonade

The Dangling Duo

Our first night in Texas was spent in a hotel in Greenville, outside Dallas. When we registered at the hotel, I told the ladies that it was going to rain, but they did not believe me, as they had not seen rain in quite a while. (Go figure!) After the children had gone to sleep, the thunderstorm rolled in with very strong winds, and we were very thankful for the hotel room. The next morning we travelled to Lake Mineral Wells State Park, but upon arrival we were told that, due to rain, all the hiking trails and the rock climbing area (the main reason we were there) were closed. We decided to camp anyway, for they said they might open the climbing area the next morning. So, we spent the day putting up camp and playing in the lake. Since we were not allowed to climb, we used our time to practice bouldering around the bathroom. They opened the climbing area, and we enjoyed rappelling for a while. It was great to be able to park and rappel within 200ft of the car. All the kids tried going down the rope without being attached to daddy. It was awesome to see Elijah practically jump off the top of the cliff in his eagerness to experience the adventure. The kids used the rappel rope at the bottom as a swing and could have spent hours playing on it. Our original intent was to climb, but though the climbing area was pretty amazing, it was too hard for the kids to enjoy. It was great fun rappelling and everyone had a good time. After our adventure we got in the van and continued driving across Texas. As we do not like to drive more than four hours a day, we spent several nights in Texas. We created a game to pass the time in the car that Elijah has really enjoyed, spotting the oil wells along the road. We would drive along and he would start screaming, “Another one, another one!!!” Texas helped remind us that we can be content in all situations. Not being able to climb and having longer drive times were wonderful opportunities for us to turn our lemons into lemonade.
