South Dakota – Great Faces Great Places (Part 1)

Loving the bugs!!!

As I lied down in my tent to nurse Tirzah before bed, sweating profusely from the sun beating down, I spied numerous pieces of grass and dirt on the sides of the tent. Not having much else to do, I looked a little closer; they weren’t dirt, they were smashed bugs – spiders and ants mostly! Well, I thought, at least they’re dead! What else can you do when you know you’re going to be doing this very thing for the next 11 weeks! I remembered a few days ago making dinner in OK, flies were all over me and the food. I kept getting frustrated with them and taking it out on anyone nearby. (Brian quickly took the kids for a walk.) In KS, the flies were not any better, but I handled them and everyone else better because I reasoned that this was my life for the next 3 months. If I allow frustration to rule because of a few bugs, I will be miserable and make everyone else feel the same. Amazing how you can change your attitude by changing the way you think. Romans 12 comes to mind – “…be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” So, I chose to “be thankful in all things” – even the extra protein. Yes, this journey of ours is a spiritual one as much as a physical one. We have much to learn and far to go. So what about you? How do you handle the “little” things that frustrate you – at home it may be the toys everywhere, the piles of laundry that never seem to get done, the spouse who has to work late again?

They have candles that help keep bugs away, outdoors. If you set them on the table it should help.

Personally, I think a temper tantrum is good once in a while. Just don’t break your food when you kick something.
I once jerked an extension cord out of a socket, from about 10 feet away. It hit my instep, and I limped for a few days.

“it is hard to kick against the pricks”
Sometimes I wonder if Noah ever fell into all that tar and pitch he waterproofed his boat with. A hundred years building a boat, and it hadn’t even rained yet.
Noah must have made his daddy (God) proud, because of his faith.

Jodi…I have spent the last several minutes reading you and your family’s adventure story. I LOVE it! What a great idea to travel cross country. I have so many dreams of things to do with our children that involve camping, adventure, history, and more. I’m going to try and learn all that I can from your trip! To answer your question, I think often I don’t handle situations well when I feel overwhelmed. There’s frustration, sometimes tears, sometimes I give up…but then I have to stop the pity party and pray for strength from the Lord. And usually, once I get started, I realize that it’s not as overwhelming as I thought. Creepy crawlies might be tough for me, though. Especially spiders and roaches. I think you have a great perspective and turning to the Word to sustain you is encouraging for me to see. Now…I’m off to read some more! : ) Stacey Daniel
